VRC Metaverse4ALL Project Shortlisted for QS Reimagine Education Awards 2024

The Virtual Reality Centre (VRC) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has garnered international acclaim for its groundbreaking initiative, Metaverse4ALL: Problem-based Collaborative Learning via Metaverse for Higher Education Disciplines, which has been shortlisted for the Immersive Experiential Learning Award at the QS Reimagine Education Awards 2024. This project represents a significant leap in educational innovation, using Virtual Reality (VR) technology to enhance learning experiences across various disciplines. Dr Eugene Wong, the Director of Virtual Reality Centre, was invited to the QS Reimagine Education Awards & Conference 2024 held in London on 9-11 December 2024.

Transforming Learning through the Metaverse

The Metaverse4ALL project aims to bridge the gap in team problem-solving by utilising a pioneering real-time cooperative VR CAVE system. This innovative platform enables collaborative problem-based learning across three pilot disciplines: heritage, logistics, and journalism. By immersing students in interactive and engaging scenarios, the project facilitates real-time collaboration through avatars, allowing participants to practice operations and solve problems together in a virtual environment.

The heritage component of the project allows students to engage in cultural preservation and the reconstruction of lost artefacts within the historically significant Tiger Balm Garden. Students work collaboratively to restore damaged heritage items, fostering a rich understanding of cultural heritage and teamwork. Although students cannot visit the garden in person, they can now experience its original appearance through VR. The use of VR greatly improves the learning experience and makes study more enjoyable compared to traditional approaches.

In the logistics domain, students are immersed in simulations of advanced automated warehouses, such as those operated by DHL Express and Kerry Cargo. Through gamified scenarios, students assume various roles to practice critical operations, including dangerous goods handling and cargo screening. This hands-on experience helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the industry.

The journalism aspect of Metaverse4ALL features a role-playing simulation set in a post-earthquake environment, where students can practice live news reporting while navigating different challenges. This immersive experience enhances their journalistic skills and crisis management capabilities, preparing them for real-world scenarios.

The VRC’s initiative has already benefited over 1,500 students since its launch, highlighting its impact on higher education. The heritage scene has been granted additional funding for further development, with hopes of expanding the VR experience.
